The more things change…

Here’s a quick summary of this week’s Facebook user interface changes, particularly those apt to affect the Facebook for AAUW document that may be useful to AAUW members across the country who want to introduce Facebook to attendees at their state conventions this spring:

The icons to access various Facebook applications have moved from the lower [...]

Getting info from Facebook pages

Here’s a quote from the comments of
http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-to-better-engage-facebook-fan-page-fans/
[I]f you are fan of a lot of Pages, the ones you never made a comment or a “like”, there are good chances you never see the updates in your News Feed
In my experience, this is at least plausible.
What does this mean for you? Well, if you are coming [...]

18 month/best value membership

AAUW’s dues year for branch members is July – June. Standard practice has been to allow new members to join branches for “half price” from Jan. 1 to Mar. 15. This has been particularly valuable in January since some benefits accrue to the branch based on the number of members they have on February 1.
While [...]

Notes from Gloria Steinem event

I was privileged to hear Gloria Steinem speak on Saturday. Her wisdom filled the room. Here are some snippets — not verbatim, but I hope I’ve captured things closely enough:

We know that in domestic violence situations, the time around the escape is the most dangerous — the time when there’s a loss of control. In [...]

Women who helped get us here #wmnhist

This isn’t really “women’s history” and it doesn’t fit in 140 characters, so I’m posting here instead of on twitter (and its women’s history Wednesdays).
However, with recent posts about “where are the women?” in the tech discussions in general and the fortieth anniversary of the Internet in particular, I just want to list some of [...]

Facebook live feed/news feed

I’m starting to think about a workshop on Facebook that I’ll be doing at a couple of AAUW state conventions next spring. I may start using this space to write up notes and test ideas. If you’d like to be more involved in the workshop development, or would like to have me attend your state [...]

Finding me …

The links at the bottom of the left hand column are provided so you can find me on twitter, facebook, and LinkedIn. I’d inadvertently tightened the security of my Facebook account so those who weren’t already in my network (friends of friends) couldn’t use that link to find me. I’ve partially corrected that — but [...]

A few final comments

[Okay, I'm cleaning the office preparing for a whirlwind of work, and found these notes that have no good place to be filed. This'll be a quick "get things off my chest" that have been pending since Convention.]
Appointed officers
Aside from reinserting the degree requirement, one change made at the convention was changing the split of [...]

Editing the branch bylaws

Here are a few comments as I edit the branch bylaws for conformance to the changes passed at the AAUW convention in June. There are two documents with information about the changes — a memo to all branch presidents and bylaws chairs, and the new model branch bylaws. See aauw.org/About/bylaws/ for copies of those
The bylaws [...]

MPP and dual members

The Membership Pilot Program (MPP) is what AAUW calls its initial step towards national dues collection. The odd name probably comes from the emphasis on this being an optional program — branches can still collect dues locally and send the checks to DC just as they’ve been doing for years.
The MPP (live 5/1/09) provides two [...]
